This is our cover of the legendary song performed by Richie Havens at the Woodstock music festival in August of 1969. Richie was the very first act of the festival, performing in the early afternoon on opening day, Friday, August 15. His song, “Freedom”, medleyed with the classic spiritual, “Motherless Child”, was largely improvised on the spot, but was so impressive in its message and in the power of its delivery that it was chosen as one of the only 2 songs from his performance to be featured in the famous motion picture documentary. The spirit of his performance, and of this song, will live forever, and speaks to the heart of two of our most basic yearnings – our need for true and complete freedom of spirit, and our need to return to, or find, our true home.
